Bangs and All

April 11, 2008 by Minnesota Mom Filed Under: Minnesota Me, My Girls 14 Comments

If you call out to your 3-year-old to ask what she is doing…

…and she responds, “Making myself pretty!”

…you should probably go investigate.

And then you should take away the scissors and attempt a comb-over.

My Zoe said to me when she was 3: I shorted my hair Mommy! I have no idea why some people think we should work on scissor skils before first grade.

We had to hide the scissors years ago so that no one (include mommy) could find them. Several times we made ourself pretty here!

Ha! My squirt just did this 2 days ago. I think he was jealous because I gave his little brother a trim.

Childhood wouldn’t be childhood without a self or sibling inflicted hair cut.
We’ve had some minor self-dos and some major ones. Our personal worst was my daughter Emma who got gum (that she wasn’t supposed to have in the first place) stuck in her hair and to get it out she took about a 2-3 inch HUNK out right at her part leaving only about a 2″ piece hanging. Sneaky brothers have come up behind unsuspecting sisters and taken chunks off the back as they went upstairs.
My niece and nephew take the cake though. They were about 4 and 5 (if I recall). G. cut C’s hair almost to the SCALP all over. C wore hats for about a year.

Oh the joy! At least once during every school year there is at least one child in my Kindergarten class who comes to school with a crooked “hairdo”. I just laugh to myself and sometimes question the child with “Oh my , you got a haircut!” Sometimes I get a giggle, but other times they just put their heads down and get a little embarrassed. Then I say to them “You know, my son gave himself a haircut when he was in Kindergarten too.” That usually brings a little smile. The best was this year when a little boy cut all the buttons off of his school shirt during arts and crafts, and then proceeded to cut a big hole in his shirt. My aide and I still can’t figure out how that happened. Kids can be quick, that’s for sure!

One of the most traumatic events of my childhood involved a self-cut in the 3rd grade. My mom had to call my grandparents to come get me, that’s how mad she was. (I wouldn’t admit I did it.) I am now VERY watchful of my daughter any time scissors are near.

Oh, no!!! Is it too bad to show us? I have caught my 3 year old with the scissors, cutting her sisters shirt…but not hair, yet. My 3 year old loves markers, permanant ones, on the wall, the carpet, her clothes, her animals, her dolls, her playhouse…you get the idea!

Oh no! I hope the damage wasn’t too bad. No picture? 😉

Oh! At least she answered! My 3 yo would say “noffing!” very sweetly and I would have to be on the way to check on her as I ask.

Oh no #4 did that to me. She chopped the hair to nearly the scalp. That was not a pretty look to grow out.

Hopefully the damage isn’t too bad.

Thanks for the warning. I’m off to put all of the scissors in the vault in the basement with all the other ‘weapons of mass distruction’ like the Sharpies.

My daughter did this (2nd time) at age 7. The very very tip top of her head. She said “it was bothering me”. Oy! She looked like a rooster for months!
