Checking In

January 2, 2008 by Minnesota Mom Filed Under: Anecdotal, Minnesota Me, Special Events 4 Comments

…to say Hello and Happy New Year! It would be great if I could stop coughing long enough to do so, because the cold that I talked about in this post has decided to hang around to help me usher in 2008 with a bang and a hack and a “keep everyone else in the house awake with my need for a good expectorant.”

It’s 4:00 a.m. and I’m up blogging. That’s how obnoxious this cold is.

We had a very pleasant New Year’s Eve, by the way. And you? We spent it with the same great set of people that I talked about in this post, which is proving to be a time-honored and (I might add) delicious tradition.

I’ll start my diet…when? Today? You mean “tomorrow” is now today? Ah heck.

How to drive your children crazy: fill a punch bowl with two bottles of champagne and just enough pink soda to make it pretty. Tell them that you’re sorry but it’s for the grownups. (Or better yet, let them drink their fill and then enjoy a quiet evening with said grownups.)

On New Year’s Day we went to Mass because we’re good little Catholics (ha) and because what better way to begin the new year? Here comes the gushing geeky parent bit: my oldest son got to serve Mass for the first time! He was a candle bearer and only started Father’s vestments on fire once. I was so proud.

Yesterday afternoon my two sons (the pyromaniac and the other one) and I went to see National Treasure: Book of Secrets. Did anyone else go to a movie on New Year’s Day? I felt herded. Like one of thousands. And in 10 degree weather to boot. And with a lingering cold that’s keeping me & the neighborhood up all night! What a goofball I am to not have stayed home like a good little convalescent.

My friend Tina (the hostess-with-the-mostest) exhibits
some puzzling behavior on New Year’s Eve

Anyway, the movie. Been there seen that the first time around, but it was entertaining and the boys were bubbling over with glee by the time it had finished, and that alone made it all worthwhile. The two of them have special saints that they honor back-to-back on December 26th and 26th, so this was that big outing.

Now I must go and put the finishing touches on my portion of our Epiphany newsletter and get that thing mailed off. On the 9th day of Christmas my true love said to me: “Turn off the TV and write the Christmas greeting!”

Which my husband finally did and I just love him for it. 😉

Keep your eyes on your mailbox for the result…

Ad Jesum per Mariam,

I’ll be watching for that newsletter!

One of my daughters just admitted that it’s unlikely she’ll ever get back to writing the Christmas letter she began, and the other one keeps saying it’s just a matter of time. Hmmm ….

And, here’s how not-awake I am right now: it took me a full 30 seconds to realize that Tina was sitting in front of a puzzle. Until that realization hit, I thought, “Huh? It’s not really such a puzzling expression ….” 🙂

I hope you kick that cold and cough soon! Try to rest!

Sorry to hear you’re sick. It seems to be the theme this year. Ick! Glad you got to have a great time with your friends at least and some QT with your boys. I think you helped my husband and I decide what movie to see on our date night this coming Saturday. We were leaning towards National Treasure and I am Legend, but weren’t sure. We’ll save National Treasure for when it comes out on DVD!

Like Karen, I didn’t realize until I looked at the picture 3 times that Tina had the puzzle placemat going.

Looks like you guys had another wonderful New Year’s Eve. We missed you all, hunkered down at home with the original Star Wars flick.

OH the New Year’s diet. Somehow my daughter must have heard me talking about mine. This morning she asked me, “Are we starting our diet today?” Unfortunately, she now uses that to avoid eating things she doesn’t like. I poured her a bowl of vegetable stew and she said, “No thanks. I’m on a diet.”
I now have to go back and look at the puzzle thing. I guess I missed that. 😉
