I hope my daughter won’t need therapy…

November 23, 2007 by Minnesota Mom Filed Under: Family Fun, Gratitude, Minnesota Me, Special Events 14 Comments

…because I wrote her birthday post one day late.

Such is the hazard that comes with being born in the third week of November! (I maintain that a Christmas birthday would be worst.)

Anyway.

Happy Belated 5th Birthday, Felicity!
You will always be my little honey,
ever my sweet, straightforward gal.
We love you very much!

When I told Felicity that I wasn’t ready for her to have a birthday, and that I really needed her to stay 4 for another year, she said plainly, “Mom. I’m going to have a birthday, and when I do, I’m going to turn 5.”

Sigh. They do grow up fast, don’t they?

We were blessed to be able to spend Felicity’s birthday (aka Thanksgiving) with family. We literally drove over a river and through some woods to get to Grandma Cathy’s, so it was very apropos.

It was also very fun and very festive. Felicity wanted the same cake as last year—a pumpkin-shaped concoction that ended up looking rather anemic because I forgot that I was out of red food coloring and had to mix pink & yellow to get my “orange”.

As you can see from the above photo, my freshly-minted 5-year-old did not mind.

I used a boxed cake mix for the bundt cakes—Duncan Hines, it must always be Duncan Hines—and went with a caramel layer on the bottom, french vanilla on the top, and a nice thick layer of penuche frosting in between.

It was yummy. Pink but yummy.

Unlike my timesaving “tradition” of years past, Cate & Felicity did not have share a birthday cake. They did, however, have to share their present, but as brand new owners of a Loving Family Dollhouse, they did not seem to mind. Yes, I got them C.P.C., but it is such sweet C.P.C. that I couldn’t help it.

I do think this will be a wise investment in years to come, as my two little hens seem quite taken with it and I’ve noticed that even their brothers stop by to be the “dad” from time to time.

And speaking of wise investments, I plan on staying home today instead of venturing out into the retail madness. (How about you?) We’ll play some games and roast some chestnuts; we’ll make some crowns, we’ll be together.

Okay, so I was like totally lying about the chestnuts.

The rest of it, though, we’ll do.

Happy day after Thanksgiving, everyone! And Happy Feast of Christ the King!

Ad Jesum per Mariam,

Staying home? No, we’re going grocery shopping today, because this is the most pleasant day of the year to be at the grocery store: no one else is! And we’re going to go to the tree farm to tag a Christmas tree. We like to cut down our own, but not until after Meg’s birthday, and by then, all the good trees are gone. At least, the relatively good trees. Southern Christmas trees are odd. 🙂

All 4 of my dc (including 2 boys) play with our LFD all the time. They inherited a 2nd one, so we dumped the first one because it was in worse condition. They’ve had many, many hours of enjoyment with CPC.

My daughters love their (garage sale) C.P.C dollhouse, too. As for shopping this weekend? Absolutely No Way.

It takes more than a belated birthday blog post to send a kid to the therapist’s couch, trust me! She look gloriously thrilled in that picture and your pumpkin cake looks great! Hope you are enjoying your post birthday(s) glass(es) of wine!

Matilda, are you kidding? Now we get to start writing the thank you notes!

Come to think of it though, they may be more fun to write after a glass of wine. 😉

You really had me going with the chestnuts – I didn’t think it went with the Duncan Hines bit but I bought it.;-) Enjoy the rest of your holiday weekend!

    Margaret,

Since your girls enjoy their doll house so much, have them check out “The Queen Mary’s Doll House” on the web (wikapedia has some great photos). This doll house is a true to scale, working replica of Windsor Castle made in the 1920s.

Happy Birthday, sweet Felicity! You are so precious, and I think your pumpkin cake looks perfectly yummy.

Yes, M, I did go shopping today. At Lowe’s. More paint sample cans. Sigh. I’m thinking I should just give up on the perfect shade of golden yellow and do something wild like eggplant or chartreuse or maybe a combination of eggplant and chartreuse.

Or maybe I should just get out my yellow and pink food coloring…
