January Daybook

{The Abbreviated Arctic Edition}

 Outside my window…

Brrring it on!

Ridiculously cold. The kids are off school again this morning. No school last Thursday, either.

At least my house is getting cleaned.

{ironic snort}

From the kitchen…

Slaw

What’s with me and this cabbage craving? Seriously, I opened this big Sam’s Club-sized bag yesterday and can’t…stop…eating it.

(I do a super-quick stirfry with sesame oil, carrots & onion. Toss in some diced turkey pastrami, a grind of black pepper and…yum. Absolutely positively DEFINITIVELY yum.)

Around the house…

Mom cleaned out the panty and what did she find?
Ridiculous

.:Five uneaten bags of cereal!:.

Seriously ridiculous.

Is it any wonder we’ve got moths? You know the ones I’m talking about, right? Little dusty obnoxious moths. In the cupboard. Because HELLO?! My kids keep feeding them.
Meal
The way I see it, I’ve two choices: one, grind it all up into a nice colorful meal and…I don’t know…sprinkle it on their ice cream or something. The second idea is to go all Nourishing Traditions on my family and just stop buying CEREAL.

How do you think they’d like them apples?

(Apples are good, though. Not to worry, I’ll keep buying them apples.)

One of my favorite things…

This powder. I use it every time I change Francis and it works wonders in preventing and/or treating diaper rash.

Caldesene

Also? I’m not getting paid to endorse it or anything. Seriously. Thanks to Governor Dayton, we Minnesotans can’t do that Amazon Linky thing anymore.

Thanks a lot, pal.

So much for making an extra $20/year.

Changed
Gratuitous Bum & Brother Shot

A picture thought (or three)…

And then I really gotta go, ’cause I have homeschoolers who need to do their Math and kids home from school who need to, like, clean or something.

I call this one “Got sisters?”

Dress Up I

I’ll give this one the title “Little Mr. Demanding.”

Demands

(yes, he keeps me on my toes)

And this one? I think I’ll just call it…

Nick Nap

.:SWEET:.

Happy Frozen Snow Day!

My mom (Deb of MNCHEC fame) cleans out the cereal boxes every once in a while and dumps them into some melted marshmellows for a rice-krispies-bars-esque dessert. The Raisin Bran and Corn Flakes might be a little weird, but it would work fine with the rest of them!

Critter crunch ( http://blessusolord.blogspot.com/2009/09/critter-crunch.html ) is a good use for that stale cereal. But, really, what's with kids and eating the last of anything? They've never truly gone hungry.

    Love those sisters!!

Awesome pictures and upbeat post. I just was cleaning out my pantry this morning, too. Why do we leave *1* vitamin in the bottle and open up a new one, so there are 3 empty bottles with just one vitamin?

Oh, my MIL would just mix all the cereals into one box and make her kids eat it. She did that with crackers, too, no matter what kind. DH HATED when did that.

Oh the cereal thing drives me batty. Really batty. I think I'll grin it all up and sprinkle it on something or other as well. LOL Thanks for the power tip. My little miss is SO sensitive to diaper rashes. Over the top sensitive. I used Sarah Heidelberger's AWESOME diaper rash cream concoction, but I'm thinking I need more to prevent it prior to it happening. Stay safe and warm!!

I keep threatening to not buy cereal anymore too. But then reality hits when I'm faced with a morning that comes too soon and hungry kids expecting me to do something. Sigh. I've resorted to dumping cereal into plastic see-through containers. At least that keeps the moths away.

I toss the leftovers in the 'chicken pail'. All those leftover bits of whatever come back to us in the form of eggs!

I hate to admit this, but I throw those last bits out. I Know. I'm so wasteful. BUT, they are not going to eat them anyway and they are taking up space in our cupboard, we need room for new boxes that they WILL eat.

You could make cereal krispy bars (you know instead of rice krispy bars?)!

Or get chickens I suppose. (and do like Suzy)

I LOVED this post. Mostly for all the cute pictures of those cute kiddos of yours!

This morning, I went to add a bit of granola to my Greek yogurt, and the bag didn't have little bits left in it. No, it was way worse; it was empty. The bag was neatly folded over, the box closed … and it was empty. Why, oh why, was it not just thrown away???

And when, oh when, are these children actually going to go to school for 5 days in a row?

And I didn't know about the Amazon linky thing. Is that why mine isn't working? Why did he do that???

When my kids were littler and my husband was working full time and going to school full time so gone for four nights a week the kids would occasionally have "cereal hotdish" for supper. They'd take their bowls and add a little of each one making their own cereal creation. They thought it was a treat! He-he! I just liked that they were fed an easy supper with minimal clean-up.

We have been known to throw the birds our cereal scraps… I hate having more than one box of cereal open. I think at one point recently we've had strawberry mini-wheats, blueberry mini-wheats, Honey Nut Cheerios, Multigrain Cheerios, Fruit Loops, and Frosted Flakes. Only 4 of our 5 family members eat cereal… We have cereal problem.
