This is me, Mrs. B., wishing you were here with me.
Huh. Something about that last line just doesn’t work. In any case, yes, today is my birthday. I am one year older than the last time I blogged about it and seven years older since the first time.
Wow. Really? This ol’ blog and I are gettin’ old.
Still. I am not quite 50 and not quite dead, which is a good thing.
Right?
So far today I have:
- Set my alarm for 6:00 to get up and write this blog post;
- Woke up at 5:00 to the sounds of my daughter baking my cake;
- Got up and, bleary-eyed, slurped some coffee;
- Started writing this post;
- Drank more coffee;
- Got everyone up to go to Mass;
- Drank more coffee;
- Closed this blog post and went to Mass;
- Came home and tried to finish this blog post;
- Bleary-eyed, drank more coffee;
- Tried to finish this blog post;
- Tried to nap;
- Woke up to the sounds of bickering kids;
- Took away the iPad;
- Drank more coffee;
- Dropped off the lunch that the schoolkids forgot to make;
- Drank more…
You get the idea.
I did not sweep up the following mess:
That was yesterday.
I did, however, have an interesting exchange with my 4-year-old. His pull-up was dry when he woke up this morning and I congratulated him heartily. “Does this mean I get Skittles or M&M’s?” he asked.
“M&M’s maybe,” I replied, “But not Skittles. I’m mad at Skittles.”
(French the rainbow? Lame-O!)
Well, rainbow or no rainbow, George stared at me. “You can’t be mad at Skittles,” he said. “You can smash them but you canโt be mad at them. They donโt cry or anything. They just sit there.”
So this is my life, my good but crazy busy life. I think back to when I wasn’t Mrs. B. (this was 18 years ago) and you know, I had a lot more time.
Still. In my heart of hearts, I longed for family. I looked ahead to that one-day wife and mother, and I prayed, “Please, God, send a Mr. B. my way.”
Except I didn’t know he’d be Mr. B.
He could have been Mr. X, you know? And then none of the rhymes in that poem would work.
Anyway, on my birthday I always get philosophical, and today of days, I’m thanking God for him.
I wouldn’t be me were it not for Mr. B.
I owe (almost) half of my happy life to him.
