Or: On Looking Uncertainty in the Eye
So which would you like to talk about: Sunday night’s episode of Downton Abbey, (a double-header!) or the unexpected resignation of our beloved pope?
Neither? Well good, because I think both subjects have been amply covered already.
It’s not that I don’t have an opinion because I do. Don’t you? It’s just that…well, yesterday felt a little like September 11th for me. I was numb to read the morning’s news and yet, after doing so, what I needed most was to turn it all off. What I needed most was to process and pray.
That’s just me, though. I can start to feel overwhelmed pretty fast.
And when you’ve got lots of little ones…
Well, I find that’s not the best frame of mind.
Better to pray, as I’ve already said. Better to pray and to bake something!
Yesterday George helped me make Aggression Cookies. Have you ever made them? The recipe is very simple. You simply dump the following ingredients in a bowl:
3 cups of oats
1 ½ cups of brown sugar
1 ½ cups of flour
1 ½ teaspoons of baking powder
1 ½ cups of butter
…then you & your preschooler have at it.
(Somehow this recipe just seemed…right.)
And aren’t those little hands just sweet? Sweet, that is, until he gets ahold of Momma’s iPad and deletes all her levels on the “mildly” addictive Candy Crush. All. 47. Levels!
“I so sorry,” he said sincerely, and his repentance lessened the sting…a bit. I wonder. Does my (over)reaction point to a worthy penance? Do I really want to know?
So today’s the feast and tomorrow’s the fast. From Fat Tuesday to Ash Wednesday: Are you ready? Do you know what you’re going to do?
I think I am.
I think I do.
Happy Fat Tuesday! Happy very nearly Lent! Happy St. Valentine’s Day on Thursday!
What a week, huh?

I had not made up my mind what to give up for Lent, but it would seem God made the choice for me (and many others)…..our beloved German Shepherd B16!!!!

Hi Margaret. I will spend the morning praying about what I will do this Lent. I have some ideas, but I hope to have a plan! God bless you today!

I know how you feel about the BIG NEWS yesterday. It was my birthday and I just felt exhausted by all that I heard. I've got XM radio so I heard the news on the radio and at home, and also read a bunch on the internet. I needed to shut it out a bit today. Praying is probably best …

Process and pray … so very often the best response to most things. Your little boy is so cute.

I am not pleased about either of the aforementioned events — Sunday's Downton or yesterday's announcement by the Vatican, the latter being heartbreaking.
Lent is early, but if you ask me, it's just in time.

I can't believe you can begin to compare a man's prayerful discernment to step down with a terroristic act that took so many lives. I think your comments are incredibly insensitive and completely out of line.

I'm sorry, Anonymous. That wasn't my intent at all to compare our beloved Holy Father to the terrorists. What I meant to say was that I felt numb and in shock when I read the sad news, much like I did on September 11th, and that I needed to turn off the news to be quiet and prayerful.
That is what I meant, and I'm sorry to have upset you.
