Overheard during the Ceremony

April 29, 2011 by Minnesota Mom Filed Under: Current Affairs, Marriage, Minnesota Me 18 Comments

Cate: Look at that hat.

Felicity: I thought it was a lamp!

I couldn’t resist waking my princesses for the royal wedding. (My princes, not surprisingly, opted to sleep in.) Even though we followed less than 0.002 % of the coverage leading up to this day, this is history-in-the-making and it’s exciting to be a part of it.

And plus I really am a monarchist at heart.

Here are my thoughts at the close of the ceremony:

  • Didn’t Kate look lovely?
  • Did you see her hand trembling as she walked down the aisle?
  • Didn’t Prince William look proud and shy and totally smitten when he saw his bride for the very first time?
  • Did not the Bishop of London Archbishop of Canterbury have an impressive set of eyebrows? (Sorry, had to look that one up after I woke up.)
  • Weren’t their vows beautiful and did they not fill you with hope for the future of this marriage?
  • And finally, was it not a consolation to hear the words “Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” being televised to billions?

“Every wedding is a royal wedding for we are subjects of the King of Creation.”

(from the opening prayer by the Bishop of London)

To this I say a heartfelt Amen, and with this I am going back to bed.

I didn't even know it was today, and we just happened to turn it on for the 3 year old's morning PBS fix. So, the 3 yo and the 9 yo and I watched…we came in very close to the ending. Yes, the dress was lovely. I was amused that it is so difficult for any woman to find a church-appropriate dress anymore, but the dictates of etiquette required it of this bride. I'm wondering if lacy long sleeves will become the fashion again (I'd be surprised if not). Who wouldn't want to wear that dress?

I kept wondering when the Prince was going to put on his hat after they got outside. He paused at the door…and that's when my husband would have put on his. Maybe there are special rules for when millions of people are watching?

Hoping and praying that they have a happier marriage than his parents. I would not want that public eye for myself or my children.

Rowan Atkinson reminds me too much of the Bishop in the Pricess Bride…"Mawage…a beautiful Mawage…" LOL. My Georgie woke me too early today, so I got to see the end…great "Grace Kelly like" dress…I HOPE it becomes the fashion : )
    Have a nice nap…..

I was up at 4am. My princesses awoke at 4:45. We were delighted with everything! Her dress was lovely. Very Grace Kelly! I loved the passage they chose from the book of Romans (the one read by her brother). I think they really set the tone for a monarchy very much in tune with the people. Everyone is chowing down on the Royal Wedding Breakfast I prepared for them. I wish I could go back to bed!

I forgot to add… I got a little cynical when the sound cut out on the station we were watching during the Our Father. I hope that was truly accidental!

Oh yes she was GORGEOUS!! I sat all the kids down to watch 5 minutes of it before school, and I explained that she was marrying a real prince and would become a real princess…and they were all so fascinated. Then Maggie (age 3) pouted, "But I'm a real princess too!" Yes, she certainly is 🙂

It was indeed, a union under Him… and I, too, loved that she trembled and that they shared the look of love between them even though bazillions were looking on!

PS: I will be watching it later (in full) with ma boys!

We were so lucky that we didn't have to get up early to watch – it was on at 7pm Japan time – which, if you're calculating, tells you that I am still up much too late right now!

I was very impressed by how understated and lovely everything was. I loved the Holy Scripture, and the homily, and all of the times the words "not put asunder" were mentioned. Oh, and the music!

For what it's worth, Charlotte, I was watching on BBC live online, and the Our Father was uninterrupted! Yay!

Beautiful! Was so lovely to see a REAL wedding dress. Hopefully this will bring classiness back to a world that is in such desperate need of it.Very religious and dignified ceremony.

We did not watch it live. Sleep is a precious commodity around here. I'll have to show my girls some of the footage, though, especially since my oldest is also Catherine Elizabeth. I did like her wedding dress! Very classy and timeless.

It was incredibly well done, wasn't it? What a smashingly enjoyable couple! Long may they remain joyful, fruitful, and loyal to God, each other and their subjects.

Those eyebrows are like wooly caterpillars – and I was looking for the stripe to figure out how cold the winter would be.

My husband's comment – "why doesn't his barber trim them!"

I so loved the wedding. It is wonderful to see a church wedding, with "Father, Son and Holy Ghost," broadcast to millions (or billions?)

My boys and I laughed at Prince Andrew's daughters' "finery." I was so happy when they, my boys, joined me at 6 (although I'd been up since 4:30.) It took me back to 1981 and sitting with my dear mum in the wee hours to watch Prince William's parents get married. I pray he and his princess will live a long and joyful life, together.

And dear Margaret, it is so nice to have you back!

    God Bless!

Parts were lovely, specially seeing an icon picture of our Blessed Lord with his mother. Thankfully CBC allowed us to hear the prayers and readings without interruption. They even scanned those attending and there was a catholic Bishop along with an Orthodox clergy attending. But I kept thing mmmmmm MAYBE one day Westminister Abby might hold……catholic mass……. you never know. 😉

    p.s.
Now that I have read the comments I just have to agree,,,,I hope SLEEVES come back in vogue for wedding dress's again. And I do wish the Anglican Archbishop had bothered to have received a hair and beard trim before the service! 😉

Jessica at Shower of Roses linked a "rebroadcast" of the wedding. My girls and I are going to have to watch it and dress up and have a tea party!

    (not at 4am)
