Feeling Social Saturday: Inception

January 8, 2011 by Minnesota Mom Filed Under: Blogging, Minnesota Me, Reviews 25 Comments

Have you seen it?

Wow.

I’m about a third of the way into it and have to keep stopping the DVD. It’s too good! My husband watched it straight through (I assume) last night; I’m “assuming” because I fell asleep around 11:00, and then woke up at 4:00 to reboot and start over.

I do much better in the morning.

First I read Steven Greydanus’s review, because I do much MUCH better with a little background to latch onto…

…and then I paused to look up Mombasa;

(It’s in Kenya. Oh.)

…and then I Googled “extradition”, because it seemed important to the plot;

…and then I made a fresh cup of coffee;

…and so it goes! What a fun way to go!

Um, yeah. Let me know if you’ve seen the movie, but no spoilers in the combox until I finish! I’ll post an update when I do.

    You started watching again at 4 a.m.? You ARE a morning person, because I still consider that Night!

    We saw it in theaters and I really liked it, but it was so confusing.

    It was confusing for me last night, too! The review by Greydanus helped…along with the starting & stopping that I've been doing to process some of the ideas.

    It's a rather unorthodox approach, Sara, but then it's a rather unorthodox movie!

    So funny — I stayed up until 11:00 last night watching it1 I was watching with a friend who had seen it before, so I had some of my questions answered, which helped. What a strange movie.

    I saw it a few days ago. It wasn't a bad movie, but I didn't particularly like it. It was so confusing I think I would have to watch it one or two more times to understand it. My husband said, and I think he is right, that the movie looked like an excuse to show what movie makers can do with computer generated images. All those explosions and the street folding itself in half looked computer generated to me. I look forward to the day when CGI don't look like they were developed in a computer, but actually look real.

    Yeah, I had to keep going back…and back….esecially in the beginning! But then I caught on!

    And I'm warning you–the movie stays with you. I had a dream a few nights ago, and I said, "wow, that was like a dream in Inception! It had three layers!" etc. etc. Oh my.

    saw it twice in the theater and ds received the DVD for Christmas.
    It's a great movie.
    Another fun mindbending movie that also has Leo is Shutter Island.

    My husband and I watched it a couple weeks ago and we didn't care for it. Too confusing. I kept thinking it was going to get better. It didn't.

    I also hated the ending.
    But it was kind of expected I guess.

    Notice how I only review the good movies on my blog?

    We just saw this over the past weekend. It took some paying attention too…

    but yes I did end up liking it. Twist and turns in movies are a good thing.

    After all the hype when it was out, we just watched it Thursday night too. It is confusing, but we thought well done in creating enough detail and interconnections that it feeds the confusion about dreams and reality.

    It was well done in terms of film-making (DH's background). We decided we disagreed on some of our perceptions, but that that was the point. We can perceive it in multiple ways.

    I liked the imagination involved and the way the characters interacted too. I still enjoyed it — but was glad to have DH to discuss it with as I watched! Hope you enjoyed and get some more sleep soon!

    Haha, that is so funny. We just watched it the other night. The last movie before we put netflix on hold for a while. I read the plugged in online (focus on the family) review before I watched it because I didn't know if it would be too violent (or depressing, or dark…), but we watched it straight through and I liked it. Interesting concept, cool special effects and stuff, but I wouldn't watch it again though.

    So interesting. Jesse and I watched it, and LOVED it! Did not really find it confusing at all… I have heard that complaint a lot, though…

    I LOVED the ending. I think it is a great thing to leave the `what happens after the screen goes dark` to the imagination of the viewer…. I love discussing this with people, too, because you can really get a sense for their personality and outlook by their thoughts on it… Movies like this really excite me, and get me in social mode… Not like that is difficult, though… lol

    Oh, and Shutter Island was AWESOME, too! I whole-heartedly second that recommendation!

    We watched this movie over the weekend and at first I didn't like it, but I kept watching it and it grew on me. Very imaginative. I thought the ending fit the movie. It leaves you thinking anyway.

    I finally finished watching the movie!

    My opinion? I think the top fell over. Do you?

    Margaret — I agree with you!

    I really thought there was a "wobble" in the top, just enough to have me stick with the idea that it would fall.

    Before we even got to that point, DH already noticed that we had to consider whether or not his wife was coming to get HIM out.

    It was very well done and incredibly creative.

    But, yes, I believe the top was going to fall. My husband disagreed. But that's OK — it's meant to be able to go either way.

    The director was quoted somewhere that the question he gets asked MOST is whether or not the top fell. He's surprised that people expect him to answer! We are not supposed to know for sure.

    Yep – I agree. The top was wobbling, then I think it fell over. =)

    Margaret,

    You're right! If you watch the movie all the way through all the end credits, the top falls.

    Um…Anonymous? I don't know which version you saw, but I watched the movie again with my sons last night, and the top didn't fall at the end of the credits.

    Still, in my mind it did.

    Anne-with-an-e, Betsy and I watched it last night and we really liked it. We think the top fell over. 🙂

    I loved the creativity and imagination of this movie. I'm intrigued by stories about dreams.

    The top falling over is the ending that makes the most sense for a movie that, in its own convoluted way, made a lot of sense to me.
