Happy Feast of All the Saints!

November 1, 2009 by Minnesota Mom Filed Under: Living Liturgically, Minnesota Me, Spiritual Growth 12 Comments

“I had a vision of a great multitude, which no one could count, from every nation, race, people, and tongue.”

(Revelation 7: 9)

Did you cry at Mass today? Tell me the truth.

I did.

I love this feast day.

All Saints Day

From left to right: Mary, Queen of Martyrs; St. Isaac Jogues;
St. Gianna Molla (sans her daughter); St. Patrick (sans his miter);
and one over-sugared, slightly sulky St. Margaret Mary*

I cannot imagine—and yet, imagine I must—the joy of meeting the great saints in heaven. St. Peter, St. Thérèse, St. Teresa of Avila, St. Josemarià Escrivà…

These are just a few of the saints that I cannot wait to meet. I can’t wait to take a walk with them—to see them, hear them, pick their brains.

  • St. Peter’s going to be big & burly & gruff. He will have super-kind eyes and hairy forearms.
  • St. Thérèse will be gushy, just like me, and St. Teresa of Avila will have a wicked good sense of humor.
  • St. Josemarià Escrivà will smile his shy, beautiful smile. He will be a really good listener and will give excellent advice.

Not that we’ll need it at that point! ☺

Which saints do you look most forward to meeting? (Besides, like, every one of them?)

Happy Feast Day!

Ed. Note: My kids’ appearance at Mass today was a far cry from their attire last night. If you would like to see a picture of my little spooks, you may do so here.

I didn't cry, but I did laugh at the end and thought of you! We went to Mass at a retirement home – a very small and intimate group – and the priest confessed to editing the intentions as someone had requested prayers for Brett Favre and the Vikings.
And my image of St. Peter is very different from yours.

Yes, I did get teary-eyed when we sang the Litany of the Saints. I. love. that. I also enjoyed your images of the saints. That was fun to read! In prayer this morning, I was thinking about the saints in Heaven and wondering who should I be asking for prayers. Who could really help me grow in holiness? Who could understand my life and my struggles? Hmmm … Perhaps he or she is already praying for me. But it got me thinking that maybe I need to pray more for the Lord to guide me to that saint(s), so that I can get to know them better and they can help me know the Lord better … Have a very blessed day!!

How did you know I cried at Mass? Oh boy, did I. But, the Beatitudes get me every time.

I think I most want to meet St. Anne, and St. Francis (of Assisi), and St. Therese, and St. Anthony, and St. John (I long to lean my head upon his chest)…oh the list goes on.

"St. Thérèse will be gushy, just like me." Oh yes, I know that's true.

I did cry just a bit. But we didn't have the litany of saints and we did have a guest priest. In charity the less said about his homily the better. Let's just say I'm not usually a fan of the homilist plopping down at the piano and belting out show tunes. Your little saints are adorable. And so are your little spooks.

I so can't wait to join that number of saints in heaven… what a party it will be! Now I've just got to make sure I get there: All holy men and women, pray for me!

Sarah, I love the idea of asking God to send me to the saints I need. I think I'll do that too.

Jenn, I don't know if you'll be back to read these comments or not…

…but I would love to hear about your image of St. Peter.

    If it's not too personal.

    Go Vikings!! 🙂

I did tear up at Mass today, too. The music did it mainly because it made me think of my parents (both in Heaven). So many Saints I can't wait to meet! St. Therese is definitely up there for me as well!

Oh, definitely Saint Francis of Assisi. Just to look on that great, great saint–what a privilege that would be!!! And St Clare as well, what a beautiful soul!!

I cried too, and didn't expect it. It was the Litany of the Saints that did me in too.
We had one of our "regular" weekend visitor priests. Less said of his homily the better too. But, Melanie, while we're several states away from you, he also ended his homily by singing a few phrases of songs — something about how we should think of Jesus (or how he thinks of us?) — "Unforgetable," "I only have eyes for you," and others…. strange to say the least.

Edith Stein and St. Jane Frances de Chantal, along with her buddy St. Francis de Sayles.

I almost cried, with disappointment. No litany, not one saint named, just more about we are so loved by God and no exhortions to try to be holy or anything. So we did the litany from the Magnificat at home too, and played games (go through alphabet and name one saint for every letter, guess which saint I'm desrcibing, etc.)

Ones I can't wait to meet are St. Damien of Molokai, St. Bernadette Soubirous, St. Daniel Comboni, St. Gemma Galgani, St. Peter Claver, St, Isaac Jogues, Fr. Walter Ciszek (I'm sure he'll be named saint), and the 7 martyred monks of Our Lady of Atlas Monastery in Algeria, who also are not canonized yet(d. 1996).

I think of St. Peter EXACTLY like you do! Love him!

Also, I have to meet Servant of God Elisabetta Tasca Serena, she is such a soul mate! A mother of 12 who died in 1978, she inspires me greatly.

I'll stop now, but I want to meet them ALL!!! I am downright greedy when it comes to my saints!- Laura
