On being a Brave Little Soldier

November 11, 2008 by Minnesota Mom Filed Under: Living Liturgically, Minnesota Me, Prayer, Special Events 28 Comments

“Our struggle is not with flesh and blood but with the principalities, with the powers, with the world rulers of this present darkness, with the evil spirits in the heavens. Therefore, put on the armor of God, that you may be able to resist on the evil day and, having done everything, to hold your ground.” (Ephesians 6:12-13)

Today is the double feast, as it were, of both Veterans’ Day and St. Martin of Tours.

On our agenda is the following:

  • Call Grandpa George (my father), who is a veteran of World War II.
  • Call Grandpa Cookie (my husband’s father), who is a veteran of Vietnam. Thanks be to God for both these men.
  • Pray for our soldiers.
  • Celebrate Martinmas with crescent rolls and hot cocoa. We will work on Charlotte’s coloring page (naturally!) while we talk about St. Martin of Tours’ life, using this story for the older kids and the Lives of the Saints version by Fr. Lovasik for the littles. For supper, we will have roast goose chicken with apple stuffing, as per Jessica’s recommendation. (I love the story of the honking goose!)
  • And finally, I (not we) will be going in for my first ultrasound. I had not planned on doing so because, frankly, I am terrified. I have decided to be brave, however. I have decided to try to be brave.

One of my children’s favorite songs is “Brave Little Soldier” by Dolly Parton. Isn’t that what we are called to be in this world? We are soldiers, every one of us, armed not with guns (necessarily) but with the cross.

We are the Church Militant and we must be brave. We are fighting the battle of our lives.

You ladies are too kind. I don’t feel brave at all. I guess it’s not feeling brave that matters, is it?

Anyway, your prayers mean so much to me. Please be assured of mine, as well.
