Believe it or not, my brand new First Communicant misbehaved yesterday! They were playing out back on the play set (which sounds perfectly appropriate so far, I know) and she gave her brother a push. He managed to retain his grip, fortunately, but given that he had been on the roof of the play set at the time of her shove (putting him at about 20 feet above ground), I greatly objected to Cate’s behavior.
Her punishment was a firm talking-to in the sitting room and a single “naughty spoon” spank. “You must think before you act,” I told her. “The pain of a spanking is nothing compared to the pain of falling off a play set. You could have really hurt him!”
I returned to the kitchen, where five-year-old Felicity was sitting at the counter with an untouched cup of tea. She slid down off the stool to go outside, then paused at the back door. “Mommy,” she said, with a look of consternation, “You must think before you make my tea. I don’t like the spicy kind. Didn’t you know that?”
And then she left and I stood there smiling.
Kind of.
