The Weekend Musicale Version

Ten years a parent and I finally thought to bring home a copy of this CD. There it was, front and center on our library shelf when I went to find it. All in God’s good time, I guess! Have you given it a listen?

My beautiful big sister Yvonne was 15 years old when I was born and was very good at mothering me. She used to sing along with this album when she tucked me in at night and oh my goodness, the memories!

Now I am singing these songs to my children and have been doing so for years. “Mockingbird” and “Puff the Magic Dragon” are two of my very favorite lullabies.

(“Puff” never fails to make them cry, by the way, and yet they always request it. Why is that?)

Still, they had not yet heard these songs in their original version—the version from my youth, anyway—and have since been delighted by the three-part harmony of Peter Yarrow, Noel (Paul) Stookey and Mary Travers. Two new favorites—“The Marvelous Toy” and “Boa Constrictor”— have now been added to those old standbys “Mockingbird” and (sniff!) “Puff.”

Now then. When we are not listening to Peter, Paul & Mommy, we are—at the insistence of the 3-year-old—listening to The Wiggles, or…The Wiggles, or…The Wiggles. It’s a good thing Greg Page (the Yellow Wiggle) can sing, or I may well have been driven stark raving mad by now.

Seriously. They are all that she requests.

And so we have no choice but to go with the flow and find a track (and there are several) that lends itself to dancing. It’s 20 degrees outside and holding! What else have we got to do?

Male partners are expendable, obviously. They are probably holed up in their room reading Tintin anyway.

Wardrobe by Seasonal Spring Concepts (circa that tub in the basement marked “Spring/ Easter”)

Above all, don’t forget the dip. The dip’s essential. (Dropping your partner? Not so very.)

Have a blessed weekend, everyone!

Your post made me go online to our library system. Not only did a put a hold on this but on Peter, Paul and Mommy, too! There’s a sequel!
    Have a great weekend. 🙂

“Mockingbird” is great but the best version is done by James Taylor & Carly Simon. Find it on “The Best of Carly Simon.”

Oh that’s great! That sounds so fun. Our ballet company danced to Mockingbird last year (The James Taylor version). I have to check this out. Cold spaghetti, cold spaghetti…

Too cute! Reminds me when I used to dance around with my mom and sister when we were young…

That’s a fave here, too! You should see Eliza trying to do ‘Boa Constrictor’ or sing Zip when it moves and bop when it stops and whirrrrr when it stands stil….
