In Praise of Being a Brave Big Sister

October 18, 2013 by Minnesota Mom Filed Under: Gratitude, Growing Up, Minnesota Me, My Girls, Special Events 7 Comments

Because, you know, in this day and age it’s important to be brave.

Okay, wait a minute. This was supposed to be a post about the little sister.

It was her 9th birthday, after all.

9th Bday IV
The Little Sister
(aka Miss Intrepid)

So why am I talking about the almost-11-year-old?

9th Bday II
The Brave Big Sister
(aka Miss Cake Decorator)

Well, because.

(End of story? Not on this blog. Ever.)

You see, in a family as large and chaotic as ours, one person’s story is never just one person’s story. Our lives intersect, often uncomfortably, and we are forever making our way together.

9th Bday III
Birthday Girl & Neighborhood Friend
(Can you tell that her dad’s a fireman?)

That said.

When you’re a girl with a sister as…intrepid as Angela, well, you are bound to be influenced, for good or for better. (See? This is an optimistic post! There will be no “for good or for bad” in this story!)

Except…there is a “for bad,” and it is this: Felicity (the brave big sister) wanted to decorate Angela’s cake by herself. Isn’t that sweet? So in case you’re wondering…that’s a “Plants vs. Zombies” theme, complete with Sour Patch “Zombies” and green gummy pea shooters, decorated in love by a big sister who knows.

She knows Angela’s love of all things PvZ.

Except…and we’re now arriving at the “for bad” part, Felicity wanted to do everything that night, including (but not limited to) lighting the candles on Angela’s cake.

9th Bday I

Which meant going quickly ’cause there were people waiting…

Which meant getting hurried by Dad and by Mom…

Which meant “Hello? We’re dealing with fire here!”

9th Bday II
Good thing our neighbor’s a fireman.

Long story short, (not), Felicity got burned on the lip with hot candle wax, right before this photo was taken. Look at that smile! You wouldn’t know it, would you? The cake was happily served and her bloggin’ momma got the shot, to the credit of Felicity and the eye-rolling of Dad.

That’s the influence of Little Sister. It’s “fight or flight” when it comes to Angela, and more often than not, Felicity chooses “fight.” My once too-timid-to-even-speak-on-stage little girl…
…has become my brave big girl.
My brave big girls.
I love ’em.

Epilogue: It’s one week later, to the day, and Felicity’s burn is almost completely healed. This to the credit of Bio Oil! Have you used this stuff? It’s awesome.

I'm one of nine, #5 to be exact, and I think this would be one of the most beautiful definitions of a large family. Your daughters are just beautiful!

Oh, those girlies are just too cute. Red rover, Red rover, send them right over! I hope you're having a great weekend. Thanks for the lovely note, dear friend.

Lol, I love their adorable smiling faces. =) Nice looking cake! I'm a cake baking failure, but these pics make me want to try again and let the boys do the decorating. Might be fun! Really messy, but fun for sure. =)
