Back on Track

The “Got Teens?” Edition

Last Friday I updated my Facebook status with: If I could bottle my teenager’s energy, it would be 100-proof.

DSC_0078

My favorite comment came from Theresa, who remarked, “I’ll take a case.”

(Me too! But only if you add caffeine.)

Would you believe that he and Jem are only now going back to school? Not today, mind you, today is a holiday. Tomorrow, though, my boys go back…and that makes nearly four wonderfully crazy and loud weeks of vacation.

I liken the activities of our home to a beehive. Lots of humming, buzzing, activity and noise.

(Not so much honey production, however.)

(Which is too bad. I like honey.)

So yes, it may take me awhile to get back on track. Meanwhile, I wanted to share with you these photos that I took on New Year’s Eve (see? told you it may take awhile!) and which are a good example of my two bookend boys. George loves his big brother very much and has gotten very used to having him around. Indeed, sometimes (gasp!) he prefers him to me.

Got a teen? Get a baby.

The two go really great together.

(Ed. Note: Speaking of getting a baby…I’m going to publish this in a small font so that not everyone reads it. For those of you who do read it…may I just ask…is it normal to have one’s cycle go wonky as they approach the 50-year mark? Or are we about to get another baby?)

(What to Expect When You’re 45 and Expecting)

(Now that would be a really fun blog post.)

I'm thinking it's going to be normal. I'm only approaching 40 and I see changes in mine already – early or skipped ovulation, mostly, though the monthly period is still regulary enough. Shorter, though, which is good. 🙂 I suspect, as one approaches 50, that you would start to miss cycles as you really gear up for menopause.

That makes sense. It is odd, however, to go from every four weeks like CLOCKWORK to five-and-a-half-weeks-and-counting!

Oooh, the anticipation! 5.5 weeks and you've managed not to take a test? Looking forward to an update 🙂 God bless.

They go wonky but I know lots of 45 and over moms so please let us know. I'm 45 too. I'm holding our 2 month old but he was our 2nd adoption blessing. Before we got the call he was waiting for us I was scheduled for some surgery since I managed to have an ovarian cyst, fibroid, and endo. The surgery is waiting for a few more months now. And we are not approaching 50 yet!

Could be either…are you charting with temps? If so, 21 days up is a thumbs UP!
I love the pictures of your teen and his little brother. I have bookend boys here too, though when they are 20 and 9, they don't always get along quite so nicely. Expect the little guy to be VERY sad when his big brother heads off to school tomorrow.

We don't chart, Barb, which keeps life interesting. [grin] And yes, it will be sad for NiNi when the boys aren't here tomorrow.

Sad for me, too! I'm losing my best babysitter.

Yes cycles get a little wonky, but honestly, every woman is different, so it's hard to speculate … Late-in-life babies happen because cycles get wonky and because women continue to ovulate into their 50s despite wonky cycles. (if you follow me) It might be harder to actually conceive since eggs are older, but on the other hand, ovulation is definitely still occuring, sometimes with two eggs per cycle. We have a close family friend who naturally conceive twins at 52 🙂 (they're in their 40s now).

And yes! Teens plus babies are a wonderful, combination! My eldest was 13 when the youngest was born. There's nothing like a baby to soothe a teen's storms and healthily utilize their energies!

Uh, I have an extra test I could mail you! Can't wait til you take a test, you do know that you will have to take a test, after putting it in the small print? You can't put all of us through that too.

I keep thinking this will be my last baby since I'm 42, but have been told many many times by many that they know someone who had their last baby at 45….

I'll say extra prayers for you.

Christine has that teen/baby thing going, and it's a special bond for sure!

It can get wonky, alright. My sister who is 47 just had a 51 day cycle. sigh…could also be that you are preggers (big grin!). At 41, my cycles have dwindled to about 25 days…not so much fun!

    I agree with Jamie tho…take a test!

First of all, you are NOT near 50 yet! Second, go to the dollar store and get a cheap test…they work great. Then let us all know soon because the suspension is really tough to live with.

My cycle started to go off kilter at around 42. I'm now 52 and I had a period in November! Though my blood work puts me in the post menopausal category. Ugh. I took more pregnancy tests after 40 than I did before! Good luck.

I love the small font so not everyone will read it!

I'm closing in on 45 myself (just a couple months away). In the last year, I've skipped several periods, in fact two in a row in the fall. Each time, I took a pregnancy test and they were negative. I've definitely noticed changes in both the timing and how good/bad each period was (in terms of cramping and length, etc.). I'm chalking this up to age as well.

Given one of your posts not too long ago, you probably can't rule out a baby blessing though! 😉

Anyone have any suggestions or guidance on beginning to chart in the "wonky" stage? Is it even possible to start charting now?

I'll have a 12yo and a newborn (with five others between them) come July. But she'll have to fight the 4yo for the baby!

word verification: fogrates. Are they cheaper?

I just realised that I am part of a bookend pair. My sister was 13 when I was born and I have 3 sisters in the middle (that we hold together, I suppose)!

If you aren't sweating that you might be pregnant then bring it on! Go get a test! How exciting!

At 47, things are definitely a bit wonky – heavy/light, late/early etc. Blaaagh!

Well, I won't say anything until you take a test. You're a bit young for those extended cycles–ask your mom.
