Just don’t call me Word Monkey

January 8, 2011 by Minnesota Mom Filed Under: Minnesota Me, Motherhood, My Boys 4 Comments

Jem was doing his history vocabulary in the next room. “Mom?” he called out. “Insufferable means obnoxious and difficult to endure, right?”

“Yes,” I told him.

A minute or two passed and then, “A manuscript is a hand-written book, right?”

“Jem,” I said, growing fairly impatient. “Go look your words up in the dictionary if you’re not sure.”

“I prefer my mobile version,” came the response.

“What’s that?” I demanded.

“You.”

That's the thanks we get for having a good vocabulary (and so far the memory retention to make it useful)! Like you, I still encourage looking it up, though…

When I was in sixth grade, a classmate called me "The Human Dictionary." I guess it stuck–I was an English major…. 🙂

I firmly believe my children will never remember definitions if I give them to them. That said — there are some free iPod apps (dictionary.com) if your man prefers the "modern" way.
