Come here often? What’s your sign?

September 10, 2010 by Minnesota Mom Filed Under: Anecdotal, Minnesota Me, My Boys 8 Comments

This is Jem.

Ball III

He’s 11 and of all my children, he’s the most straightforward.

There’s little drama when it comes to Jem—what you see is what you get. Oh, he has a great sense of humor and all. He makes me laugh on a daily basis.

Yet, when it comes right down to it, he is as upfront and even as the day is long.

Or should I say, as the pile of dishes in my sink is high.

Therefore I was most surprised the other night when, upon bringing me the glass of ice water I’d requested, he handed it over with a husky “Here, Baby.”

For a minute I thought I was at a bar. My eyebrows shot up and I laughed out loud. Really? I thought. He’s calling me baby?! Where did this come from?

Jem stared back at me, serious and unblinking. He repeated his words (a bit slower this time) with just a hint of impatience at being laughed at.

“I hear the baby.”

The baby? I was confused for a moment and then….oh, the baby! George had woken from his nap and was upstairs crying in his crib!

Jem was helpfully pointing this out.

His ol’ ma being legally deaf and all.

Too funny. Thanks for the tired-Friday-night-after-a-long-first-week-of-homeschooling smile!

I read your story several minutes ago and I'm STILL laughing. What makes it so funny to me is that I'm about the same age as you are and I've been joking lately with my crew about me going deaf. That is hilarious. Thanks for sharing that with us.

Lol!! Today I said, "thank you, how kind of you, but no thanks" to my dear daughter who offered me some papaya – she was bewildered. She'd actually been asking if I'd turned off the iron!

Too much rock music in my youth 😉

Love hearing about your second eldest wonder boy too. And glad I am not the only mom going deaf. Children are a real occupational hazard to one's hearing, are they not?

    Congrats on your publications!

That was TOO funny! I'm still laughing out loud. Kids say (or at least we think we heard right?) the funniest things.
