Teaching with Terrorists

September 21, 2009 by Minnesota Mom Filed Under: Hearth & Home, Homeschooling, Keeping It Real, Minnesota Me 13 Comments

Often I will visit this lovely homeschooling blog or that one, only to see a dozen lovely photos depicting all the fun things they have done that day. I will feel greatly inspired and, yes, a little envious. No offense, dear lovely homeschooling blog. It is just that this is how my classroom looks on any given day.

Teaching with Terrorists

How can this be? This space was clean an hour ago!

There is no other explanation than classroom terrorism. All I need do is leave the room for the hostiles to enter and take control. In this case, it appears that a dreaded math bomb has been detonated. Fortunately, no one was injured by the flying bits of manipulatives or by a blow to the head with a math gnome.

This is the lot of this homeschooling mom. This is what I face each day.

I must be fearless to accept this mission.

And I must drink lots and lots of coffee.

AMDG,

I know that shouldn't make me laugh (or maybe it is supposed to, just a little), but it does. I'll tip my coffee cup to you, I don't know if I'll be so brave! Math gnomes will be making me chuckle all day.

Welcome to my world, honey…Try homeschooling 3 older kids while the 4 and 2 yr old boys tear the whole house apart…sigh. God called us to do this, right?

Okay, Barbara, that's when you have your kids pack their books and school from the car as you drive to Starbucks.

Don't ask me how I know this.

Oh dear, I feel your pain, Margaret. My youngest son (a.k.a Master of Disaster) is a creative genius, who devised unheard of ways to destroy the house while I homeschooled his older siblings. Luckily he is now in 2nd grade and I can keep him under my thumb most of the time. Unfortunately, he has passed his "bag of tricks" on to his little sister. *sigh*

Coffee's good, but for me, chocolate is better.

God bless you and your lively brood!

I love how honest you are!!! I'm with you, Margaret! My house looks just like that room you posted! so…can you show other rooms too?!?! ha ha!!!
All we have to do is keep trying and keep drinking coffee.
What a gift we have w/homeschooling!
    God bless,

Mmmm…looks startlingly familiar. And alas, just because they get older does not mean they get less messy. You should see Superboy's "work space" right now. On second thought, maybe you shouldn't. Lets just say my coffee is never quite strong enough.

Thanks for the reality check! That is my just like my house at the end of our homeschooling day! I have each kid pick up a room and I used to get the complaint, "I didn't do this, the little kids did!". To which I would reply, "Yes, but the little kids would not have made such a mess if I were not busy homeschooling YOU!"

We all get a chuckle out of it – sometimes…..

I LOOOVE this! those perfect homeschool bloggers have me baffeled! (The act of focusing my camera on those perfect homeschool pictures seems to be the trigger for the bomb!)It would take me a month of little moments to get enough shots for a post about a week of school! You know-it was the markers on the floor that made me cringe the most!

caffeine is essential! Personally I don't know how little ones can learn without making a mess. So I would just embrace it:)

Just wait until your little, darling Anthony is crawling and then things really get crazy again. Oh, how blessed we are.

Coffee is a great coping mechanism. I also use it all the time.

I am still enjoying this post! It really rings true and I have shared it with other homeschoolers. Thanks for putting into words (and pictures) what so many of us experience – helps to know we are not alone!
