A Topsy-Turvy Meal

April 2, 2008 by Minnesota Mom Filed Under: Family Fun, Food and Drink, Minnesota Me, Special Events 9 Comments

Most of our April Fool’s Day passed without prank or pratfall, although I will say that I found Cheryl’s comment about the rubber-banded spray nozzle to be priceless. I just didn’t read it to my sons.

I did, however, put together a topsy-turvy meal that was a heck of a lot of work for Mom fun for the whole family.

We ate our dessert first: (shepherd’s) pie with a layer of bright pink potatoes on top. (You add beet puree to get the pink.)

The main dish was the reason that my kids would even eat dessert: brownie “burgers” on Betty Crocker “buns” with a side of sugar cookie fries.

(Oh, and don’t forget the kiwi pickle or the dyed frosting condiments.)

Joe won the award for the most delightfully clueless comments—a running string of remarks that had his little brother in stitches.

First came, “This tastes like cake.”

Then, “I am not going to have dessert.” (This after eating the entire burger as is, which pretty much made his already nauseous mama even sicker.)

And finally, the remark that had his brother practically on the floor:

“I stink of beet.”

(Joe is ten. You must forgive him.)

A tip of the hat goes to my friend Cathie B. and to Family Fun magazine for all the inspiration. (Here’s another link if you need it.) You could do this meal on any occasion, really—for a birthday or just for fun. Kids just love playing “opposite”…

…and moms, I know, love all the work. ; )

Lots of work — you’re a fun mama! All I managed to do was make St. Francis de Paola’s dinner on the wrong night!

Margaret, that’s adorable! We’ve done the “backwards” supper before and the kids loved it! I have to admit, though, I certainly lack your creativity…a brownie burger? And beet/potatoe pie? I have to agree with your dear son…that’s one dessert I’d have to pass up!

I’m going to have to try this, minus the beet thingy, ours would have to be a white pie!

    Great job!!

Very fun. You are a mother after my own heart and I have to agree with your son – P.U. – Beets!

What a fun mommy you are! That is a great idea, and I happen to like beets.
